Ouch! That looks kind of strong.

Major players in the industry know which buttons to push and the hype surrounding big ticket products can make you feel like you just have to join a program because everybody else is.

Here are some unpleasant facts.

For every real success story there are 100 lies.

For every real MLM success story there are hundreds if not thousands of fail stories beneath that made the success story.

Statistics can be made to say anything.

I’ll give you an example.

I received an email from a reasonably high profile marketer who focuses on the  Traffic Exchange Industry several days ago saying that he as making $3.20 for every lead that he sends to a certain program.

Sounds pretty good doesn’t it?

Let’s crunch some numbers.

The program he was talking about offers a one time offer up front for $47 which enables you to earn 70% commissions on the product.

Which, assuming that you took that offer (and I’m sure he did) means you  would be making make $32.90 for every sale of the OTO that you made.

By his own numbers, that means that you would have to refer ten people to this particular product to make one sale.

Now, here’s the rub.  The guy undoubtedly has a big mailing list – lets say for argument’s sake 5000 people.

Let’s assume that he got a 1% opt in rate on his mailing that means he generated 50 leads to the product at a touch of button and that by his own numbers five of those leads took the one time offer.  He made $160.

Extrapolate those numbers over the TE industry with the big TE owners with lists of 10, 20, 30 thousand and more and you will find that 1)There’s already been a huge amount of leads generated from the product 2)Trying to advertise the product directly in TE’s and Safelists is going to be ultra difficult because people already know about it.
This means that you may generate one lead per 500 page views.

What can you learn from this?

1/Learn to critically analyze any claims made by anyone – look behind the raw numbers
2/Build your list – this is the only way you can successfully build an online business.
It’s not sexy, it’s hard work but it works
3/Advertising products directly on TEs is a waste of time

That said, I’m prepared to nominate Traffic proX as a rising star this year.

Traffic ProX is now owned by Lynn McCutcheon who has been working super hard at raising her profile in the TE arena whilst simultaneously working at getting Traffic ProX firing on all cylinders.

While the big boys like Traffic Splash, Traffic Witch, I love Hits et al are great advertising vehicles when used properly, they are broad brush type exchanges that lack a certain personal touch.  (The exception to this rule is StartXchange, when Tim Linden has successfully built an online community that is worth much more than just another Traffic Exchange.

Every now and then an exchange comes from nowhere and gives the big boys a run for their money.  Louise Venison did it with Hits Booster Pro and while picking winners in this game is like buying raffle tickets, Chain Hits has all the  ingredients to be successful.  It’ has just launched and membership is very low. Of course, spending your time promoting one Traffic Exchange can be a very tough gig, unless of course you’re the program owner – then you have reason to be doing it, but promoting multiple Traffic Exchanges at once can be a very good way of rapidly building Traffic & Income.

Traffic Exchanges will pay you quite nice commissions for membership upgrades and on most occasions credit purchasers. 

Again using Traffic Splash as an example, you get 50% commissions on gold upgrade memberships if you are upgraded yourself, 10% if you’re a free member.

Typically you can expect about one free member in ten to upgrade so there is plenty of potential to make good income promoting a Traffic Exchange like Traffic Splash. 

The trouble (and the opportunity) is that there are hundreds of Traffic Exchanges all competing for a piece of the action and for anybody to be across them all is just impossible.

Part of the solution to the problem is to utilize a Traffic downline builder – a traffic downline builder is a membership site enabling you to promote multiple Traffic sites at once and there are dozens of these about.

Traffic Hoopla has been ranking traffic exchange performance for many years and ranks Trafic Exchanges according to responsiveness.  An updated list is supplied every week detailing the Top 25 Traffic Exchanges. 

Pro members receive a detailed report.

Traffic Hoopla enjoys a very high profile within the Traffic Exchange Community and is constantly refining and updating it’s lead generation pages.

There are however some disadvantages, these are that the rankings change every week, so there is some constant maintenance required and you need to be on the ball or you can miss out on some referrals.

Additionally Tim Linden from StartXchange revealed that it was possible for a Traffic Exchange owner  to cheat the Traffic Hoopla ranking system and set about to prove it.  You can read about it at his blog here

But as a traffic builder Traffic Hoopla does a very good job – I have a downline in excess of 100 at Traffic Hoopla and it is growing all the time.

Affiliate Funnel is a very interesting downline builder that includes a forum and allows members to recommend their own programs.  Nearly one hundred Traffic exchanges are listed and members are encouraged to vote for their favorite Traffic Exchanges.  Traffic exchanges are then listed in ranked order.

I like affiliate funnel and I like all of the Traffic Exchanges listed in the Top 20.  I can see that the potential  to build Traffic with this program is quite large, however, I do have some issues with Affiliate Funnel.

Mainly it concerns the voting.

Members are encouraged to vote for their favorite Traffic Exchange and naturally Traffic Exchange owners are keen to encourage their members to vote for their exchange.

So what happens?

The big Traffic Exchanges get ranked highly – not by performance but by popularity and with all due respect most Traffic Exchange users don’t know what is working and what isn’t.  It’s a quibble but again as a downline builder an excellent vehicle to build Traffic

Traffic Tornado does not quite have the profile of the other two programs but has a loyal following that promotes the program aggressively.

One advantage I see with Traffic Tornado is that it has a fixed number of programs and adds a couple of other advertising mediums like US free ads to the downline.

If you’re serious about using Traffic Exchanges you simply must be using at least one of these traffic builders and recommending it to your downline or other users whenever the opportunity arises.
